grs question, please boost

so like for real are there any people who do this surgery if you're not thin, because like i've been hearing the occasional murmur that there are but i really can't afford to get my hopes up without knowing for sure

genuinely trying to collect as much info from peeps as possible here so i can chip away at something that's been super miserable for like 20 years it'd actually mean a lot if people can hit the boost button instead of scrolling past it just sayin

@Kat both Wittenberg and IIRC Satterwhite strongly recommend a BMI ≤ 35 but i was right up on that line and Wittenberg didn't make a big deal about it. i got the sense there was some room for flexibility there.

the major concern is that risk and side effects from anesthesia scale with BMI, not so much GRS-specific complications.

grs question, please boost

@vyr i'm kinda over that number but i'd kinda have to get this done before i'd be able to do any sort of significant weight loss stuff, and my health is pretty solid in general

at the very least i'd wanna get an upper limit from wittenberg or something so i have a goal to reach that's better than the "lose 200lbs so you're under the healthy weight for your height because i only care about thin 5'8" people" i got a couple years ago in chicago

grs question, please boost

@Kat hah, i saw a similarly unrealistic cutoff for Bowers at one point. they're totally cherry-picking.

i recommend calling or emailing and asking. Wittenberg's office at least is fairly responsive to email. might even be able to get that info without a formal consult?

grs question, please boost

@Kat also BMI is such bullshit. total ad-hoc metric 🙄

grs question, please boost

@vyr any sort of contact info? i don't know who's out there or how to get in touch with anyone really

grs question, please boost

@Kat Wittenberg is at mozaiccare.net/ email office@mozaiccare.com

Satterwhite is at alignsurgical.com/ email admin@alignsurgical.com

they are both SF surgeons; i didn't look much further afield.

grs question, please boost

@vyr honestly i'll drive from minnesota to california myself if that's what it takes to get this done

grs question, please boost

@Kat iirc Mayo Clinic runs a GRS program and they're in Minnesota. i swear there are people on here who got it done there and maybe a few on Reddit. relatively new program but experienced docs who trained elsewhere? i really don't know that much but maybe someone else would

grs question, please boost

@vyr i can try and see what i can find on my own about that, i wonder how bad they limit people for their weight though

grs question, please boost

@Kat @vyr I don't remember if they told me a specific BMI but they are pretty upfront about everything and have good practices otherwise (don't make you stop estrogen). Definitely worth checking out.

grs question, please boost

@lawremipsum @vyr they're like less than 20 miles away, i really hope i can do it there, it's tough to get my hopes up about this stuff though ahaha

grs question, please boost

@Kat @vyr 🤞 🤞 🤞 🤞

grs question, please boost

@Kat my surgeon is pretty strict on it which is the biggest downside to him and the others at this hospital, Mt Sinai

grs question, please boost

@bitofabother yuuup that's sort of the issue, it's a million times harder to transition if you're not thin, it seems

grs question, please boost, weight loss

@Kat yeah :/ sorry, I'm rather familiar with how strict it was because I had to hit it (wife went to same surgeon at same time) and it Sucks

grs question, please boost, weight loss

@bitofabother let me know if you have any advice for doing weight loss stuff while dealing with really bad dysphoria, nothing i've tried really sticks because i just don't have the energy to drive it

grs question, please boost, weight loss

@Kat I was kinda powered by rage and spite, since I knew I only had to definitely keep it up for a set time limit 😅 there are easier restrictions, though ❤️

grs question, please boost, weight loss

@bitofabother i just can't really keep it up as far as the creepy chicago guy's "get to this weight that's unhealthy for your height because i only want 5'4" trans girls that look like supermodels" without having a dysphoria spike so i'm kinda hoping there's someone with a higher limit so i can meet them halfway, maybe

grs question, please boost, weight loss

@Kat a lot of them are around 33-35, and there are a few that I hear are more like 40?

I feel you :/

grs question

@bitofabother this guy was like... 25 bmi max, hard limit, and he refused to say this until we drove down, paid for a consult, and after he'd already spent half an hour grabbing at my junk

we have not followed up with that guy

grs question

@Kat oh holy shit that's abuse, the strict restriction I was talking about is still 33 and I thought that was extreme, I'm so sorry

grs question

@bitofabother i'm gonna try and work hard and hit 35 (i have no health problems at all but i'm above that because my genes are trash) and hope i can find a surgeon that'll meet me there instead of expecting me to make it twice as far with my dysphoria stuff

i'm just not gonna get very far until *after* i'm not dealing with dysphoria, hopefully they realize that

grs question

@Kat yeah, that's a thing. 35 is probably the most common limit that I know of

grs question

@bitofabother 35-40 is doable, it'll be a bit of a sprint but it's a lot more physically un-impossible than the creepy sexually harass-y guy wanted

kinda wish i could have gotten this done before i turned 30 but it's kind of an arbitrary goal to begin with haha

grs question

@bitofabother i'll just have to use it twice as much until i'm like 42 to catch up, i guess :blobshrug:

grs question, please boost

@Kat I'll ask who im going to, Dr Rumer, and let you know what her policy is!

grs question, please boost

@numberonebug @Kat (hope it's okay I'm reading replies) Rumer surprise dropped my partner like a month before surgery was scheduled for weight limits she hadn't clearly communicated, sov she's not one I'd recommend for folks concerned about weight.

grs question, please boost

@numberonebug @Kat that was four years ago or so I think? Maybe things have changed.

grs question, please boost

@Kat this is super vague but maybe it helps a little even emotionally that an ex of mine in the UK wasn't thin and still got GRS (with no complications and might i add a very nice final product) so there is definitely at least one doc out there
